Periodontics

Gum disease, which is also called periodontal disease, is an infection that attacks the tissues and bone that surround and support the teeth. There are two stages of gum disease. During gingivitis, the first stage, the disease will only affect the soft tissues, or gums. The second stage is called periodontitis. This stage is more severe and will spread to the bone that supports the teeth. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on the teeth, above and below the gum line. The other factors that can contribute to gum disease are as follows:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Some illnesses
  • Some medications
  • Bad habits like smoking
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Family history of gum disease

If you have any of the following symptoms, you may have gum disease:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush and floss
  • Enflamed gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that will not go away
  • Gums that are pulling away from the teeth
  • Formation of deep pockets between the teeth and gums
  • Loose or drifting permanent teeth
  • A change in your bite
