When you lose a tooth or have a tooth extracted, a hole is left in your jawbone. Because of this, there may be high and low spots in your jawbone. This unevenness can make it hard for a denture to fit correctly, as the denture can rub uncomfortably against high points. If you are preparing for dentures, Dr. Anuradha Vaddineni may perform alveoloplasty in North Richland Hills, Texas. Alveoloplasty is a surgical procedure that smoothes out the jawbone so that dentures will fit correctly.
During alveoloplasty, our dentist will smooth out lumps in your jawbone to flatten the jawbone’s ridge. An impression will be taken of your teeth and jaw so that a cast can be created. The cast is ground down where the bone needs to be smoothed. Our dentist will make a plastic model of your jaw using this cast. Using this model, our surgeon will determine where and how much bone needs to be removed. The model is placed over your jawbone periodically during treatment to determine if the correct amount of bone has been removed. Once the jawbone has been properly shaped, the gums are stitched back into place.
